Gratitude for Food

Why I picked up this topic?

This is the Holy month of Ramadan and in Dubai we see people fasting everywhere. Work colleagues, friends, neighbours, domestic help, delivery boys, laundry guy, taxi drivers – fasting devotedly for one whole month despite the gruesome heat and temperature in Dubai crossing 50 degrees. Imagine. No water. No Food. Till sunset.

So, I thought of dedicating this blog post to Muslims all over the world who are fasting dedicatedly and being faithful to their religion.

We all eat food daily. Not one or two times but all day, all year round. But how many of us sincerely thank for the meal that we eat?

Being thankful and appreciative of food that we eat and feeling gratitude before having a meal was a norm of our society in olden days. However, the practise is long forgotten in the modern-day society. In the fast-paced culture of present times, people are always on the go and hardly find a proper time or place to sit and have their food. Therefore, the common courtesy of offering thanks before the meal is no more practised.

Have you ever experienced hunger? How did you feel at that time? Angry. Sad. Disillusioned. Confused. Weak. Hunger shows to us how important the food is to our bodies, our life, our wellbeing. Without food we will not be able to live or feel happy or think rationally.

And do you know that food connects us to our five senses: smell, taste, touch, sound and sight? When you eat mindfully by giving rest to your thinking and by being present in the moment, that’s giving respect to the food. Also, you can actually enjoy what you are eating and feel more content with even less eating.

Food should not be taken for granted. It fuels your body with energy and life. It takes hard work of thousands of people including your parents or spouse or yourself to put that meal on the table. So take a moment before each meal, look at your plate and appreciate the amazing gift of nature. Remain present while eating and be content with whatever you are eating. Be grateful for the present moment and for future while you eat, and the outcome of this ritual will reap as your good health and strong body. Be grateful for nature, for the sun, air, soil, water and the weather as without these gifts, we would have no food.

We are one with nature. We are ensemble. We are one song, Uni-verse

Your Take away from this post:

  • Be thankful and appreciative of the food.
  • Be present and content while eating.
  • Be grateful to everyone who has worked hard to get the food on your table.
